Ellesmere Model Railway Club meets at Cockshutt Millennium Hall every Tuesday . We are a group of enthusiasts who enjoy creating realistic working models of many aspects of railways, some based on real places, some imaginary – but all with attention to detail to produce miniature worlds for folks to enjoy.
These come in all sizes – some sit happily on a table, others need much more space. Cambrian Green, for example, is a small layout representing a Great Western/Western Region scene from the 1940s to the 1960s; Meres and Mosses is 18 feet long and shows a fictitious narrow gauge railway servicing peat extraction in the local area with the drying sheds and the canal basin building represented. There is even Fantasy Land, with all kinds of creative features that fans of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter will enjoy, and Have-a-go-on-Sea offers the chance to operate trains (using both traditional and digital controls) for all ages!
There are two big projects getting under way again. Ellesmere is going to be a model of the station as it was in the early 60s, just before Dr Beeching’s infamous axe fell! Trains ran between Whitchurch and Oswestry, and there was also a line to Wrexham – the remnants of these can still be seen in the area – and we are working on a model which will demonstrate how the station operated at that time, including the transport of milk along with the usual goods and livestock. We are grateful to the Rotary Club of Ellesmere for their financial support for this project which will be a contribution to a wider understanding of this element of the area’s history.
Truro is a much bigger enterprise, 20 feet long and almost 9 feet deep! The plan is for this to be shown at exhibitions in due course, but there is a lot to do yet! Set in the 1960s when steam was still much in evidence alongside the first generation of diesel traction, it features the Great Western main line down to Penzance, but Truro is full of interest with a large engine shed, goods handling and also a branch line to Falmouth so there will be plenty to see when this is operating fully. Up to the minute electronics are used for the control of the trains, points and signals, and there will also be a road with various cars, lorries and buses moving back and forth. Accurate models of the original buildings will be a major feature, including County Hall (which will be familiar to fans of Doc Martin) as well as the station, good and engine sheds and local houses.
Where can you see all this? We have a major exhibition (with lots of guest layouts and some traders) at Ellesmere Town Hall on 19th&20th August 2023, and we also are showing some of the layouts at the Cambrian Railway Centre in the station at Oswestry on 15th&16th July
We meet on Tuesdays from 10am - 6pm. We welcome all ages and skill levels, too, and are always pleased to welcome visitors if you would like to drop it. We might even offer you a cuppa!
